Dr. Omair Tahir
Dr. Omair Tahir is a compassionate and highly accomplished Pulmonary and Critical Care specialist whose medical career spans three continents and some of the most prestigious institutions in healthcare. He joined the Richmond community with a clear mission: to improve lives by helping patients breathe easier, especially those navigating complex or advanced lung conditions.
“Pulmonology offers a wonderful opportunity to be part of improving a patient’s quality of life,” Dr. Tahir says. “Helping with timely diagnosis and launching treatment for diseases like lung cancer is incredibly rewarding. It’s a privilege to support people on their journey to recovery.”
Originally from Pakistan, Dr. Tahir earned his medical degree from the National University of Science and Technology in Islamabad. He completed his internal medicine residency and chief residency at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Rhode Island, followed by an intensive fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. He has served as both educator and clinician across Brown, Yale, and VCU, where he currently holds a clinical faculty position.
Dr. Tahir brings extensive experience in ICU leadership, advanced diagnostic techniques like EBUS, and interdisciplinary care coordination. He has led critical care units at St. Francis Medical Center and continues to innovate in the space through his AI-based healthcare startup, Muawin Health.
But beyond titles and awards—including Physician of the Year at Bon Secours in 2024—what defines Dr. Tahir’s care is advocacy. “Our healthcare system can be difficult to navigate,” he says. “I try my best to simplify that journey and advocate fiercely for my patients.”
At Virginia Lung, Dr. Tahir embraces the clinic’s community-centered mission. “We prioritize the needs of our patients above all else. This is their health, their time, their story, and it deserves respect, clarity, and excellent care.”
